Drum Machine

Last Laugh Comedy Club, Hunters Bar, Sheffield, 11 April 1996

Using the drum machine in this way was something I first thought of in a trip to America in 1995, on seeing things like Letterman. I used to use it as a way of starting my normal 20-minute set, and found it great for both bonding with the audience and introducing a built-in element of improvisation. Because I didn't know when the person I gave the drum machine to was going to do a drum roll, it made the audience more active and forced me to react in the moment when it happened. Here, I'm using it in my compèring, and it had the added advantage of covering up the ropey bits in my new material. Having said that, I was very pleased with the Noel Gallagher gag.
